Cabin air filters: Good climate control through regular filter change
The majority of modern automobiles now feature a cabin air filter to adsorb unpleasant particles and gases. However, in order to maintain good climate control of the cabin in the long term, the filters have to be replaced at regular intervals.

Cabin air filters are very efficient. After all, during a one-hour trip they filter up to 100,000 liters of air and protect the passengers from dust, pollen and soot. An increasing number of filters additionally feature an activated carbon layer, which also keeps gaseous pollutants such as harmful exhaust gases, high ozone concentrations and unpleasant odors out of the passenger cabin. These gases are primarily hydrocarbons as well as inorganic and harmful gases, for instance hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen.

All the more reason to change the filter elements regularly. Once they are clogged with particles, the air flow decreases and it takes considerably longer to clear up fogged windows. If the interval between filter changes is too long, the accumulation of contaminants found on the old filter, in conjunction with the humidity, provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and molds. They collect in the ventilation and air conditioning ducts and emit into the passenger cabin extremely unpleasant odors and substances hazardous to health. Therefore, MAHLE recommends changing the cabin air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 kilometers – at a minimum annually, and even more frequently with higher dust concentration levels.

Since modern automobiles are increasingly equipped with cabin air filters, repair shops will benefit from significant retrofitting and spare parts sales. Independent studies indicate that by 2010 approximately 80 million cabin air filters will be sold for retrofitting purposes in the European core markets alone. In the meantime, the sales numbers for cabin air filters with activated carbon layers will grow three to four times as quickly as those for particulate filters.

MAHLE offers cabin air filters of the MAHLE Filter and Knecht brands on all relevant markets as aftermarket products. They are manufactured at MAHLE production locations in Europe, Asia and North America. These high-quality filters fully comply with the respective specifications of the automobile manufacturers – regardless of whether they are produced with or without frames, round or square, with beveled or straight edges. Drivers can rely on MAHLE’s expertise.
