New logistics center for emerging markets
MAHLE is opening a logistics center in Krotoszyn, Poland. Initially, the center will supply the local market, followed by the Ukraine and the Baltic states in 2007.

In September 2006, MAHLE will commission a modern logistics center in Krotoszyn, directly adjacent to the production facility of MAHLE Polska. The center will stock the entire range of products of MAHLE Aftermarket GmbH in order to be able to provide local customers with even faster and better service. Approximately 2,500 engine components and 2,800 filter parts will be warehoused and picked in an area measuring more than 5,000 square meters. For this purpose, around 500 pallet storage bays and 5,000 smaller pick spaces will be installed in this storage and retrieval area, as well as more than 6,000 reserve pallet storage bays.

The product range of MAHLE Aftermarket GmbH includes, among others, pistons, piston ring sets, assemblies, cylinder liners, bearings, valves, oil filters, fuel filters, air filters, cabin air filters, air driers for commercial vehicles as well as transmission oil filters; all products in high-quality original equipment quality. This will offer Polish customers access to the entire filter and engine components range for their region still in this year. In the future, they will be supported by their own local sales team and will receive their orders directly from the Krotoszyn warehouse. Starting in 2007, the team in Krotoszyn will also serve the Ukraine and the Baltic states. This is a good basis for the continued successful collaboration.

It is planned to supply pistons, cylinder liners and valves from the production plant in Krotoszyn on a daily basis. The new logistics center will receive additional shipments three times a week from the central warehouse in Schorndorf near Stuttgart. Further deliveries will come directly from various other locations of the MAHLE Group. The MAHLE Aftermarket location in Krotoszyn will supply the parts required in the entire sales region from stock. The goal is to reliably supply the customers with parts within the customary delivery period. If the sales volume should increase as planned, sufficient space is available for expansion.

With more than 40 million inhabitants, Poland is the largest market of the ten new EU member states and offers great growth potential. In 2004, the year prior to its accession to the EU, the gross national product increased by 5.4 percent and exports grew by 27 percent. Today, Poland is an important business partner and attractive location for investors. A large portion of this development can be attributed to the Polish automotive industry with its dynamics, which has turned the country into the eighth-largest European automobile market.

Prior to the fall of the Iron Curtain, the streets in Poland were characterized by domestic brands such as Andoria, Polonez, Star, Jelcz, Autosan, Liaz or Kamaz. In the 1990s, an increasing number of compact cars from Fiat and Daewoo appeared, which were also manufactured in Poland. As a result of the rapid growth of the pre-owned vehicle market since 2003 – the time at which the import restrictions for pre-owned vehicles from the EU were lifted – the variety of available brands increased in Poland. Consequently, with a time delay, this also produced a noticeable increase in demand for spare parts for these “new arrivals’. MAHLE Aftermarket recognized this very promising business segment and set the course with the new logistics center in Krotoszyn.
