STUTTGART, September 2006 – MAHLE, the Stuttgart systems supplier, has been supplying MONOTHERM® pistons for the commercial vehicle sector for six years. These pistons achieve excellent results for the Euro 5 and US 10 emissions standards. A look at the future, however, promises new challenges. Emissions must be continuously reduced, and peak cylinder pressures and combustion temperatures for applications meeting the Euro 5 and US 10 standards will presumably rise. This means greater mechanical loads and higher temperatures on the piston. When requirements increase, MAHLE follows suit In an effort to meet the new development objectives at an early stage, the advanced development of the MONOCOMP® piston is in high gear. The MONOCOMP® is a composite steel piston. The piston crown and skirt are screwed together in a special process. The piston withstands higher temperatures due to outer and inner cooling channels. Since the piston is made of two parts, different materials can be used for the piston crown and skirt. This makes it possible, for instance, to produce the piston crown, also referred to as the piston head, from high-temperature steel. Composite pistons have been used successfully in MAHLE large-bore pistons for several decades. In initial engine endurance runs with peak cylinder pressures exceeding 240 bar, the MONOCOMP® piston produced promising results. The MAHLE Group ranges internationally among the top 3 system suppliers for piston systems, cylinder components, valve train systems, air management systems and liquid management systems. With its unique systems competency in the field of the combustion engine and engine peripherals, MAHLE is a globally leading development partner for the automotive and engine industry. All established manufacturers of combustion engines are customers of MAHLE. With above-average enthusiasm for performance, precision, perfection and unique innovation, MAHLE enhances the development of vehicle and engine technique and keeps setting benchmarks – for more than 80 years. The company is locally present in all important markets of the world. Approximately 37,500 employees are engaged in 80 production locations and in seven research and development centers. More than 2,000 development engineers and technicians worldwide are working on trend-setting concepts, products and systems for the development of the combustion engine. In 2006, the MAHLE Group expects a turnover of approximately 4.3 billion EUR and is therefore one of the 30 largest suppliers of the automotive industry worldwide.
