The MAHLE urea filter—long service life, best filter properties

Stuttgart, September 2011—MAHLE has developed a urea filter with a long-lasting filter media and three innovative heating options. The filter optimally prepares the urea before it is converted into ammonia in the exhaust line for selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

With the new, patented urea filter, MAHLE supports SCR systems, which are being used more and more frequently. These systems are present in trucks, other commercial vehicles, and even in passenger cars, to convert nitrogen oxides (NOx) in diesel exhaust into harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O). Ammonia (NH3) has been determined to be an optimal reducing agent. It arises when an aqueous solution with a urea content of about 32.5 percent is injected into the hot exhaust flow, where it hydrolyzes into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The urea solution is carried in a small separate tank in the vehicle.

Because SCR systems are finding increasingly widespread use, the storage and transport structures of AdBlue are becoming more complex, which necessarily increases the risk of contamination. MAHLE's urea filter removes potential contaminants, thus supporting the intended operation of SCR systems.

The filter media of the new urea filter is made of a fully synthetic material. This material is characterized by extreme temperature resistance. Other filter materials, such as cellulose, crack at low temperatures because liquid in the filter expands when it freezes, for example. The fully synthetic material in the MAHLE filter is different. It withstands more than 1,000 freezing cycles without damage, while retaining the same filter performance.

A second factor in its favor is the patented heating system for the housing. The customer can even choose from three systems variants. If a separate heater is not required, the fluid volume is reduced by a dip tube. It is also possible to connect the filter to the coolant circuit or to use electric heating.

MAHLE's urea filter is suitable for both on-road and off-road applications. For the production of the filter, MAHLE can fall back on its extensive manufacturing expertise for filter elements and plastic injection moldings. MAHLE produces such parts at many locations around the world in original equipment quality.
