MAHLE pistones integrates connecting rod production

MAHLE, Inc., Morristown/USA, a US subsidiary of the Business Unit Pistons and Engine Components of MAHLE GmbH, continues to expand its business activities. In this process, a complete connecting rod production facility has been installed to supply the customers in North America. Equipment and tools are being optimized for a large-scale production soon to be implemented in the Mexican MAHLE Pistones S. de R.L. de C.V. plant in Ramos Arizpe. Small-scale production in Morristown has successfully started and release orders are very high. For the North American customers DaimlerChrysler, Ford, and Polaris, the MAHLE plant in Tennessee manufactures C70 steel blanks and powder metal blanks. The resulting "crack" connecting rods are subsequently completed with pistons and piston accessories to form Power Cell Systems. When installing the small-scale production in Morristown, MAHLE worked very closely with the global Brockhaus plants and invested in the prime technology currently available – in a production cell that uses a programmable hammer and the so-called cross roll technology.

For the future large-scale production, a 6,000 square meter plant has been built in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, which can accommodate up to four production lines of this type. MAHLE is thus very well prepared for the large-scale Power Cell System supply, with vertically-integrated products, regardless of technological and design requirements of the respective customers. The currently available connecting rod line at MAHLE Pistones, the installation of which already began in mid 2002 in Mexico, can manufacture and further process connecting rod blanks of various materials, e.g. powder metal or forged C70 steel. At the same time, various connecting rod designs are possible. Furthermore the production lines are equipped with error protection and in-line inspection devices with automatic correction, thus meeting or even exceeding all quality standards of the OEM customers. At the beginning of 2003, the high quantity of new orders received from American MAHLE customers allowed MAHLE to start installing a second connecting rod production line.
